about

Hi, great to see you on this webpage! My name is Ekaterina Egorova, I am a Geographic Citizen Science Researcher at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation at the University of Twente, The Netherlands. With a background in Geographic Information Science, I am currently designing and conducting projects that bridge science, technology, and society to address pressing environmental and social challenges. I involve participants at every stage of the research process, tackling issues ranging from well-being to the design of green urban infrastructures. I deeply believe that geographic and place-based citizen science can bring transformative benefits for both communities and ecosystems.  However, these activities still do not engage evenly across all sectors of society, leaving aside places and communities whose lives could benefit most. My mission is to address this gap by empowering communities — particularly those currently underrepresented in science — to shape their environments through collaborative research, geospatial technology, and outdoor exploration. My most recent projects engage vulnerable communities such as temporarily displaced youth, while my research focuses on the link between geographic citizen science,  place-making and environmental stewardship. These projects would not be possible without the invaluable contributions of participants, volunteers, student assistants, projects’ partners and friends. Together we work to ensure that place-based citizen science is truly inclusive and contributes to resilient communities and ecosystems alike.

“I have learnt that there are a lot of beautiful spots in our city. One should spend more time in those places, in the nature.”
